Lab 3. Multicast - Sparse Dense Mode - Auto RP

  • Auto RP is cisco proprietary.
  • There are 2 types of auto RP:
1.      Sparse-dense mode auto RP
2.      Sparse mode auto RP

  • In sparse-dense mode, RP Candidate and Mapping Agent use dense mode to distribute to other routers.
    • Cisco-Announce use 224.0.1.39
    • Cisco-Discovery use 224.0.1.40
  • But for distribution multicast traffic still use sparse mode in auto RP sparse dense mode.
  • In auto RP, configuration only in router that will be chosen as RP Candidate and Mapping Agent only
  • In one group, only one RP is allowed. If need backup, it can use static RP
Lets do the lab :)

R1#
ip multicast-routing
!
interface Loopback0
 ip address 1.1.1.1 255.255.255.255
 ip pim sparse-dense-mode
 ip ospf 1 area 0

interface FastEthernet0/0
 ip address 12.12.12.1 255.255.255.0
 ip pim sparse-dense-mode
 ip ospf 1 area 0
 no shu

R2#
ip multicast-routing
!
interface Loopback0
 ip address 2.2.2.2 255.255.255.255
 ip pim sparse-dense-mode
 ip ospf 1 area 0

interface FastEthernet0/1
 ip address 23.23.23.2 255.255.255.0
 ip pim sparse-dense-mode
 ip ospf 1 area 0
 no shu

R3#
ip multicast-routing
!
interface Loopback0
 ip address 3.3.3.3 255.255.255.255
 ip pim sparse-dense-mode
 ip ospf 1 area 0
 no shu
!
interface FastEthernet0/0
 ip address 23.23.23.3 255.255.255.0
 ip pim sparse-dense-mode
 ip ospf 1 area 0
 no shu

For the testing interface lo0 in R1 will join group to ip multicast for example 239.0.0.1 and configure RP Candidate and RP mapping agent in one router. Actually it can be separated between RP Candidate and RP mapping agent.

R1#
int lo0
 ip igmp join-group 239.0.0.1
!
ip pim send-rp-announce loopback 0 scope 255
ip pim send-rp-discovery scope 255

Let’s verify the multicast
